The End of Poverty Economic Possibilities of Our Time

Poverty was originally inevitable as a result of world affairs, such as slavery, wars and battles for independence. After world affairs has settled, majority of countries recovered from their despair and hardship. Today, the worldwide rate of poverty has dropped dramatically except in sub-Saharan Africa. Jeffery D. Sachs has spent 25 years working in indigent countries of Africa in effort to understand the cause of their endeavors with extreme poverty. Sachs, then, provided an analysis of why extreme poverty exists in Africa and how well developed countries can contribute toward eradicating the complication. Extreme, or absolute, poverty can be identified by the livelihood of a household. Jeffery Sachs categorized poverty as [When a] household cannot meet basic need for survival. (Sachs 20). Basic needs for survival would be considered food, water, shelter and medical care. Absolute poverty can, also, be considered someone who makes an income of $1 per person per day. (Sachs 7). Only developing countries can experience the oppression that come with being poverty-stricken. Oppression that Jeffery Sachs describes as No clinic nearby. No safe water source. No crops in the field. And notably, no aid. (Sachs 7). Many villages are over a mile away from a medical institution. Sub-Saharan Africa is overwhelmed by Malaria and HIV/AIDs to the extent of which the existing hospitals can not treat all of the patients.
